International Baccalaureate Diploma Program

HIGH SCHOOL GRADES 11–12

Discover, Create, Lead: The TASIS IBDP Experience.

If you are considering joining TASIS to complete your high school career, you are making a wise choice. I say this not because we have a beautiful campus, filled with friendly students who will make you feel welcome. Nor do I commend you for recognizing the rigor and quality of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP), the support you will receive from our University & Career Counseling department, or because of TASIS' esteemed international reputation. Although all of this is true, the real reason you should join us at TASIS Portugal is our amazing teachers — entirely committed to your success and ready to help you go the extra mile as they walk beside you along the journey.

I promise that you will receive the best instruction and the highest level of academic support. You will also enjoy the strong and positive student culture, a tremendous array of co-curricular options, and a truly international group of peers.

We look forward to meeting you and learning more about your goals and interests.

I'm New to IBDP. What Should I know?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a challenging two-year educational journey designed for students in 11th and 12th grades, also referred to as DP1 and DP2. This comprehensive program not only emphasizes academic rigor but also encourages students to think independently, engage in community service, and prepare for global higher education. Expand the tabs below to learn more.

What are the Core Components of the IBDP?

These signature elements of the IBDP are so important that a student cannot be awarded the IB Diploma without completing all three.

Theory of Knowledge (ToK)

How do we know what we know? Through discussions and reflections, ToK encourages students to question accepted norms, understand diverse perspectives, and consider the complexities of different disciplines. In this course, you will explore real-life situations, dive into ways of knowing (WoK), and understand how different areas of knowledge (AoK) are interconnected.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

CAS ensures you maintain a balance between academic rigor and personal development. It requires students to engage in experiences that foster creativity, physical well-being, and community service. Whether through theatre performances, sports events, or volunteering activities, CAS empowers you to take action, be creative, and contribute positively to your community. It’s about more than just grades—it’s about making an impact, building skills, and developing empathy along the way.

Extended Essay (EE)

The Extended Essay (EE) is the chance to conduct independent research on a topic you’re passionate about. This 4,000-word essay allows students to explore in-depth a subject of their choosing, under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. The EE teaches essential skills such as time management, research methodologies, and academic writing—valuable tools for future university studies.

What are the IBDP Subject Groups?

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) has designed the subjects groups to ensure a well-rounded academic experience. By selecting six subjects in addition to the IBDP's three core subjects, students benefit from a robust, customized curriculum tailored to their individual interests and future goals.
