Diploma Program

International Baccalaureate

TASIS Portugal is an authorized IB World School for the Diploma Programme. These are schools that share a common philosophy – a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that TASIS believes is important for  our students. Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years  Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-Related Programme (CP). For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org

TASIS Portugal’s IBDP vision

The IB uses both external and internal assessment in the DP.  External assessments such as Examinations form the basis of the assessment for most courses. These can take the form of essays, structured problems, short-response questions, data-response questions, text-response questions, case-study questions and sometimes multiple-choice questions. Teacher assessment is also used for most courses. This includes oral work in languages, fieldwork in geography, laboratory work in the sciences, investigations in mathematics and artistic performances. At TASIS Portugal, we prepare students with the mindset of further academic study.

Our focus is a curriculum that challenges, empowers, and engages our students. Academic enrichment classes continue through high school, as do a range of elective options to boost and support academic achievement while providing creative outlets. Additionally, students learn and practice research skills, public speaking, leadership, arts, service, and competitive sports.TASIS offers the opportunity to develop our students push for discovery and excellence.

What is the IB Diploma Programme?

Established in 1968, the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) was the first programme offered by the IB and is taught to students aged 16-19.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is recognized and respected by the world’s leading universities, and evidence suggests that higher rates of DP students go on to university and higher education study than non-IB students.

The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS), and the extended essay. Through the Diploma Programme (DP) core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake service to the community.

Why the IBDP?

  • Encourages students to think critically and challenge assumptions
  • Prepares students for university work through the development of research skills and taking responsibility for their own learning
  • Students learn in a flexible environment crossing disciplinary, cultural, and national boundaries
  • Students who earn an IB Diploma may earn up to one year of advanced placement credit in American universities and colleges

It is demanding, thorough and will push our students academically. In some cases, the IBDP will offer more challenges for students than their first year of undergraduate study. We are here to guide, support and encourage our students through it all.

Students are introduced to the concepts and ethos of the IB in the fall of Grade 9 through information sessions led by the IBDP Coordinator. Additionally, career and university presentations consist of Future Pathway sessions with the Director of Post Secondary Counselling, College and Careers. In Grade 10, students are guided through the IBDP subject options via individual interviews with the IBDP Coordinator and the Director of Post Secondary Counselling, College and Careers, followed by an Options Fair in early Spring. Initial option choices are then reviewed and further one to one meetings take place with students and their parents in order to ensure they arrive at informed and confident choices.
