Mission and History

TASIS Portugal is the fourth campus and most recent addition to the TASIS family of schools.

Our Mission

TASIS Portugal challenges and nurtures students to pursue academic and personal excellence with the goal of helping them become engaged global citizens and innovative, selfless leaders.

Our Vision

TASIS Portugal aspires to be a world-class school that transforms students’ lives through a love of learning, truth, beauty, and goodness.

Our Values

Community: TASIS Portugal believes in the power of community, and the way we interact and conduct ourselves weaves the fabric of our culture. Families choose TASIS Portugal in part because they perceive that the school shares many of their values and subscribes to the theme of partnership. Together, we are educating the young people in our care and preparing them to be good global citizens for a world in which that is often lacking.

Responsibility: TASIS Portugal teaches the importance of social responsibility, which involves an understanding of democratic values, freedom of expression, good manners, and good citizenship. This also means understanding the imminent threats to our planet and being caretakers of our environment.

Excellence: TASIS Portugal values personal excellence. We encourage our students to do their best in all areas: academics, arts, athletics, and citizenship. We stress the value of effort and the satisfaction and rewards that come with hard work.

Teamwork: TASIS Portugal believes that learning is a lifelong process, and by working together we can create a better world. Therefore, we encourage teamwork over competition and collaboration over solitary learning. This includes the promotion of diversity in thought and culture and the elimination of sexism and racism.

Courage: TASIS Portugal believes in the development of self-confidence and courage and encourages students to take risks and stand behind what they believe while remaining tolerant and empathetic. This is the essence of leadership.

The TASIS Mission

The TASIS (The American School in Switzerland) family of international schools welcomes young people from all nationalities to educational communities that foster a passion for excellence, along with mutual respect and understanding.

Consistent with the vision of its founder, M. Crist Fleming, TASIS is committed to transmitting the heritage of Western civilization and world cultures: the creations, achievements, traditions, and ideals from the past that offer purpose in the present and hope for the future.

Seeking to balance the pursuit of knowledge with the love of wisdom, and promoting the skills of lifelong learning, an appreciation for beauty, and the development of character, each school combines a challenging academic program with opportunities for artistic endeavor, physical activity, and service to others.

Believing in the worth of each individual and the importance of enduring relationships, TASIS seeks to embody and instill the values of personal responsibility, civility, compassion, justice, and truth.

Verum, Bonum, Pulchrum

Libraries symbolize and communicate values. The façade of the M. Crist Fleming Library (on the TASIS campus in Switzerland) contains three words that have inspired Western educators since the time of Plato: Truth, Goodness, Beauty. Plato saw these as “fundamental” or “transcendental” values by which anything can be exhaustively judged. To some degree, everything can be judged as true or false, good or evil, beautiful or ugly. Truth, Goodness, Beauty also apply to specific dimensions of human existence — Truth to thought and logic, Goodness to action and morals, Beauty to enjoyment and aesthetics.

Truth, Goodness, and Beauty are supreme ideals. Beauty, the most accessible of the three, often opens up human awareness to the existence of the other two. The harmonious proportions of a building's architecture could prompt students to reflect on harmonies in music or mathematics, or even the qualities possessed by a good person who balances practical concerns with noble ideals. Plato believed that a diligent mind would eventually attain a vision in which these three values and their complex relationship would transparently unfold. The Good would reign supreme, for “although knowledge and Truth are beautiful things, the Good is other, and more beautiful even than they” (Republic 509a).

The TASIS Ideals

The Tower

The Tower stands for culture (humanitas). The campuses of the TASIS Schools and Summer Programs, all located in beautiful, historic settings, are a constant reminder of the beauty of nature. The campus buildings, with their graceful, humane proportions, help students to value culture and beauty in their own lives. In addition, TASIS makes travel an integral feature of the programs, giving students the chance to experience first-hand some of Europe’s most sublime and memorable achievements.

The Lamp

The Lamp symbolizes wisdom (sapientia), and at TASIS this means learning to strive for ideals. All TASIS programs emphasize sports and arts and take advantage of their European cultural settings to teach students the importance of developing high standards and worthwhile interests. Wisdom is seen as the result not only of reading books and browsing the Internet, but also of sacrificing short-term pleasures for long-term goals; it’s something just as much of the heart as of the mind.

The Sun

The Sun represents truth (veritas), which implies both honesty and integrity. The structure and standards of behavior at TASIS are designed to promote students’ personal integrity and moral development. Truth builds trust, and when young people from different countries and backgrounds get to know each other in an atmosphere of loyalty and trust, as they do at TASIS, prejudices are broken down, lasting friendships are made, and a vibrant and caring community is created.

The Book

The Book represents knowledge (scientia). While providing a balanced American-style curriculum and fostering an environment where high academic achievement is valued, TASIS also supports individual students through small classes and dedicated teachers. Through the breadth and depth of its courses, and the commitment of its faculty, TASIS encourages all of its students to honor knowledge and become lifelong learners.
